Ergani Stadium is quite well known when it comes to Athenian grounds. It’s located on the edge of Vironas, a neighbourhood just outside of the city center, at the foot of Mount Hymettus. It’s also next to the famous open-air theatre, “Theatro Vrachon”, where concerts and plays take place in the summer and the Hymettus Municipal Stadium, where many locals go to exercise. Its standout feature, however, is the hill next to it; watching a game with such a backdrop is simply priceless.
The stadium is home to Doxa Virona and Athinaikos, the two main clubs of Vironas, who share a considerable rivalry. Although Doxa is by far the most supported of the two, Athinaikos is the more successful club. They are famous for their impressive performance against Manchester United in the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1991, where they managed to hold them scoreless until extra time in the second leg. This season, they will play in the first level of Athens’ regional league.
Ionikos, the visiting side, has also seen some glory in the past. Back in the 90s, they reached the cup final and also played against Nantes in the UEFA Cup. Last season, they were relegated from the top flight to the second division. But now, things are different: due to financial reasons, they have to play in the first level of Piraeus' regional league, two levels below where they were last season.
Now, you’d think that a side that was in the top flight just two years ago would be the favourite against a team that’s been playing in the regional league for some time. That’s what I thought at least, but the score speaks for itself. Athinaikos didn’t stop scoring throughout the game. The visiting fans, who made plenty of noise at the start, were far less enthusiastic by the end.
